PIMA programmes and projects

Are you looking for information on a project or programme related to contaminated soil or groundwater? Finland has several PIMA programmes and projects that have their own tasks – we have compiled the most topical ones on these pages.

As a rule, the polluter or property holder is always responsible for the investigation and remediation of contaminated soil or groundwater. In fact, most of the projects related to contaminated areas are carried out by private parties, such as in connection with construction.
In addition, the government has programmes and projects aimed at managing the risks of contaminated areas in the same way.

  • The Clean Soil Programme is a kind of general programme that prioritises sites that pose an environmental and health risk at the national level. The programme implements the National risk management strategy for contaminated  land in Finland (PIMA strategy) and focuses on so-called orphan sites whose responsible party is unknown or cannot be reached.

  • The KAJAK project investigates the risks of closed and abandoned extractive waste areas.

  • The JASKA project of the Finnish Oil Pollution Compensation Fund has investigated and remediated contaminated sites. The JASKA project has already ended. Nowadays, it is possible to apply for general government support for the investigation and remediation of contaminated sites.
